Mine from this
and my sister's from this
Can anyone guess what her name is? Does anyone actually remember this programme?!
My middle name is Jane (same as my Mum's-very original!) and my sister was forever teasing me by calling me Plain Jane, especially at the time of Jane Harris in Neighbours. It could have been worse....if I had been a boy I would have been called Barry!
For Girl B and Middle B we got our inspiration from a book of baby names, although my eldest niece originally suggested our daughter's name. Tidgy was almost called Bobby, which I loved, but hubby would only allow it if he could have 'Robson' as his middle name. I toyed with the idea even though I hate football but I could see it would be important to hubby, being a lifelong ITFC fan. I just couldn't do that to my son though. What would have happened if he was a Canaries supporter?! I also had visions of him being featured in the Evening Star for his unusual name and being ridiculed forever more.
How did your parents choose your name? How did you choose your children's names? Baby names book or something less conventional?

My 2 daughters names came from films. Amelie, which is a delightful french film. Tallulah, from Bugsy Malone. I let both dads choose my daughters middle names, bit risky, but I was happy with their choices.
ReplyDeleteMy own name, Melanie, a fairly common name for the late 70's has no special meaning to my parents, they can't even remember where they found the inspiration!
I am a big film person, so I have no qualms about choosing my daughters names from my fave films, I am still really happy with my choice and hope they will be too!
Amelie and Tallulah are lovely names and compliment each other well.
ReplyDeleteI never really had any chosen names so we found it difficult when naming three children. It was much easier to decide which names we DEFINITELY didn't want!
Great post. I have two boys, one named from my favourite book a character called Lucas and one from a film character called Tyler. Both american but they suit them. x
ReplyDeleteHello Heidi!
ReplyDeleteI saw your link to this blog this morning and it's only now that I have had time to post a comment! As soon as I saw the title of your blog I wanted to share with you what I think is in a name!
I think names are really important! I'm quite fascinated by them. In my job I have to remember lots of names, and I do! I pride myself on the fact that I can remember a class of 30 children's names after having spent the first day of the school year with them! :o)
I have met many children with the most obscure names. There was a girl called Disney, with her brothers named Micky and Donnie! The hippy family Star, Sunny, Angel, Chance and Rayce! There has been the misspelling of names such as Chevonne, and the brand 'names' of Oakley and Armarnni (yes, also spelt incorrectly!) All lovely children who had no idea what some of the staff in my school thought of their names! I think it is sometimes brave/foolish of parents to do this!!
My name is Sarah and my sister is Emma, both names chosen by our parents because they didn't want names that could be shortened! So the fact that they call us Sar's (pronounced Sez) and Em I find hilarious!!
Choosing my own children's names was fun and exciting! I was told if you like a name you have to practise shouting it (in full) up the stairs!! I tried it!! It worked!
My eldest son's name was tricky. We knew we were having a boy, so that made it easier, we thought of so many names for him but the name we chose eventually means so much to us! His name is Dylan and we chose it because it means 'the son of a sea god' and we live by the sea. His middle name had to be a family name but as my husband has an older son that has his middle name already we chose my husband's Grandfathers name, James. Our surname is Sands, so it went so well with Dylan and the seaside theme! After shouting it up the stairs a couple of times we were decided! My husband made a t-shirt for my bump with Dylan's name on it and from then on Dylan was a part of our family.
From the moment I found out I was pregnant again (Dylan was only 5 months old) I just knew it was a boy and I started calling him Jack. I just knew he was my little JackPot, and when we had the scan and found out for definite he was a boy, Jack it was! His middle name had to be family names too! So we gave him two middle names, Ian after my dad and Oliver after my husband's dad, he is called Clive but he hated his name and was called Olly when he was young because Clive looked like Olive!
So, What is in a name? LOTS!!
To finish...The reason why I was so keen to share all this with you, is because a couple of years ago my husbands young niece had a baby boy, everyone was so excited, but then she told us what she was going to call him! She decided to call him Dylan James Sands...
What upset me the most was the fact that no one in my husbands family understood our utter fury at this!! The time we had spent coming up with a name that meant so so much to us! The meaning of his name, our name! My mother in law was to have a grandson and a great grandson with exactly the same name and she didn't see what the problem was!! Unfortunately it has lead to all of my husbands family not speaking to us, it has been just over 2 years now and they have missed so much of my boys lives! It is their loss, my Dylan and Jack and their big brother Toby are the most amazing boys! Crazy, but amazing!! :o)
Sarah (Peggy) Sands was Rose (mrssandsy)
