Proud Mummy Moment

My 4 year old son, as you are probably aware from previous posts, is a handful. We've really been struggling with his behaviour lately and he seems to be rebelling against everyone and everything.

He rarely sits down for long. He likes craft but has such a short attention span that one brush stroke later and he's had enough of painting. He had shown very little interest in letters and numbers until a couple of months ago and is slowly getting the hang of his name so you can imagine my pride when he came home from preschool with this:

I've won an award....

The lovely Emma at TheRealSupermum has presented me with the Liebster Blog award. It's for small blogs (those with less than 300 followers) to share the blog love and spread the word.

I'm really honoured. I have been blogging on and off since summer 2009 and it's lovely to receive comments, let alone awards like this. I'm often under the impression that I'm 'talking' to myself!

The rules are:
  • Post displaying the award, linking back to the person who awarded you
  • Choose your own blog picks and let them know that they're awarded
  • Hope that everyone discovers some new favourites
  • Revel in the blog love!!

My awards to go the following mummy bloggers;

Spooky...

Although I am fascinated by supernatural stories I don't necessarily believe in ghosts.

Many years ago, when experiencing a tough time in my life, I felt a strange presence in my kitchen. I froze solid and 'felt' my late Great Grandparents walk behind me. It terrified me at first and then I became strangely calm. It was almost as though they just wanted me to know that they were looking after me.

This evening, while picking up my daughter's discarded uniform off her bedroom floor something strange happened.

I found this small piece on the floor:

Instantly I knew that it was the missing ear from my daughter's Winnie The Pooh photo frame. The frame that has held a photo of my late grandparents since Christmas 2004. The very same ear that was broken off in 2006 and we couldn't find. My daughter's room has since been cleared out and she changed bedrooms last September. Over time I have been through everything of my daughters and hadn't come across the ear. I was rather taken aback that it should appear after all this time.

I am again going through a stressful time in life and I feel this discovery is significant in some way. The photo of my grandparents has huge significance in itself. It was taken on Boxing Day 2004. A time that we didn't think my Grandad would see as he suffered a major stroke in July 2004 and was given less than 2 hours to live. Each day then became even more precious as he fought and fought to live another 3 years, although he was left severely disabled.

My wonderful Nanna died in October last year and obviously my daughter was old enough to understand about death and I remember her one evening not long after Nanna died telling me "I'm sad that Great Nanna has died but every time I look at the photo of her & Great Grandad I will remember them" How touching. Often when I'm in her room I find myself just staring at the photo.

First job tomorrow-get the superglue out!

I like to think that it was a sign from them. My Nanna would be offering her words of wisdom on the situation and Grandad, well Grandad never really knew my 4 year old son but I just know he would have loved my son's character and mannerisms and would have given me a huge hug to make it all better.

So, was it a sign of my 'guardian angels' looking out for me in times of need or just coincidental that something to remind me of my beloved grandparents appeared in times of need? Whatever it was, it brings me comfort.

What is your opinion on guardian angels? Do you have one?

Ranty post

In the last week or so I've been really bothered by some tweets and DMs. Some aimed at me directly, some aimed at tweeters in general.

I understand that we're all looking for extra followers and more traffic to our blogs but I don't believe that we should be told what to do.

I've had DMs telling me to look at a blog and comment. Probably automatic DMs at that. Eurgh. I HATE them. I unfollowed them straight away.

I've had tweets telling me to go over to facebook and like their page. I'll 'like' what I like, not what I'm told to like.

I've seen tweets from people demanding 'FOLLOW ME!' Yes, in capital letters. This statement would only have been seen by that tweeter's followers, unless retweeted, so what they thought they would achieve I don't know. A statement like that doesn't make me want to follow you.

I much prefer to find blogs to read and people to follow through personal recommendations but if you want more followers and readers be polite about it. Don't demand. Is it really too difficult or too much hassle to ask nicely?

Am I really the only one that thinks like this?

Rant over!

Usborne books-Max and Millie review & competition

Usborne books have a new series of board books out for toddlers. Max and Millie are two adorable toddlers learning some important manners and habits.

We were sent Take Turns, Max and Millie to review. It was a great choice for us as my 4 year old is being rather rebellious at the moment and whereas he once shared happily with his sister, friends and preschool class he has become very selfish. He could identify with the story as it was set in preschool and Max has to learn to share the big, red car with Millie.

I was able to take my son through the story page by page and we talked about how Millie felt because she wasn't able to play with the car and we talked about Max's attitude towards sharing. We then discussed the outcome. I think he took it all in! He loves this book and wants to take it in to preschool so that it can be read out to the entire class.

What I liked about this book was the simple, repetitive text easy enough for my son to understand and repeat back to me after we'd read it a few times, and the delightful illustrations by Desideria Guicciardini. It has hopefully helped him to realise the impact of his actions on others. My son loves to sit down with me & a book but loses interest if a story is too long but this was an ideal length for toddlers and young children.

Thankfully we don't have an issue with teeth brushing or bedtimes but if we did I would get the other books in the series for my child to read through. I highly recommend them.

The Max and Millie books are available on the Usborne website priced at £5.99 each

Curtains For The Window

If you take part please leave a link to your blog below. Thanks!

What are you reading?

What are you reading?

I have a huge pile of books waiting to be read but I am stuck on the same book I started about 5 months ago. I don't get to read very often and it's often only a chapter or so a night so I am still reading...

I did interrupt my reading of The Book of Tomorrow with another book which was just too good to put down. It came highly recommended and it's probably the most powerful, gripping book I have read in years. I know that this is 'What are you reading?' not 'What have you read?' but if you haven't read it you MUST get a copy:

Piccalilly Wrap Around Hooded Towel

We were asked by Izziwizzi Kids if we'd review a wrap around hooded towel from Piccalilly

From Piccalilly's website:
Made from GOTS certified organic cotton sourced through CHETNA Organic
Fair Trade-Our CHETNA farmers own a 20% share in our manufacturing partners factory
Made from the finest organic cotton free from chemical pesticides and fertilizers.

             Image from piccalilly.co.uk

This towel is so soft and luxurious. It’s well made and beautifully stitched. Other hooded towels gape at the sides and leave the children feeling chilly but having it as wrap-around means they are kept warm. I used it for my youngest son when we went swimming and although he was shivering when we came out of the pool it soon warmed him up. I even used it myself as my own towel seemed so rough in comparison!! My 4 year old used it after a bath and didn’t want to take it off. It is recommended for up to 5 years old but my 6 year old daughter used it and it was plenty big enough for her to use. It has washed really well and kept it’s shape. It would be useful if it could be tumble dried as it's difficult to get towels dry at this time of year but it's not something that puts me off recommending this towel.

It comes in 3 great colours and is available from www.piccalilly.co.uk  Take a look at their other great products for children. We also like the look of the towelling dresses, perfect for the beach!

Mistaken Identity

I felt that my youngest was having the same few breakfasts and he must be getting bored so when I saw Aldo Zilli's baby food range in Tesco I thought we'd give it a try.

Hubby was washing up (and clearly not paying attention) as I said to him

"I've got Harry some new food to try. Aldo Zilli has brought out a range of baby food and I thought it would be something different for him to have"

His reply puzzled me "He's Iranian isn't he?" As far as I was aware Aldo is Italian. "Iranian?!"

"Yeah," hubby replied "He's always talking with an Iranian accent at the start of his act then he talks with a London accent." Then it dawned on me "Ohhhhhhhhh, you mean OMID DJALILI!!"

Not much difference.

Have you or someone you know ever mixed up 2 people who are nothing alike?

Kidzsacks with The Little Green Paintbox

We were very excited to be told that our name had been pulled out of the hat to test the Kidzsack from The Little Green Paintbox.

The Little Green Paintbox is a company selling eco-friendly arts & crafts for adults and children. It's run by the lovely Laura who somehow manages to be a mother to 5 children and work as a teacher as well! My two eldest children love arts & crafts and I’m always looking for crafts that are a little bit different and ‘green’.

Kidzsacks are drawstring backpacks screen printed with a picture for you to colour in. 8 reusable non-toxic markers are included. I was really interested to see that the bags are made from 100% recycled cotton and polyester broken down from plastic bottles and made into Ecotec yarn. The straps are made from organic natural fibre.

The bag is tough wearing and perfect for my children as they love to carry bags everywhere with their toys and books in. They could also be used for school, sports kit and holidays.

My 6 year old daughter coloured the bag in and really enjoyed being able to personalise it. It looked fabulous once she had finished and she was really pleased with it.

We had the ballerina/castle design but there are other great designs;
Jungle
Sports
Ocean

This bag has so many possibilities to it and the fun doesn’t end once you’ve coloured it in. You can wash the bag with liquid detergent and hot water and once dry you can colour it in again and again. The markers also have a long life as they can be recharged by dipping the tip into water.

This was a big hit with my daughter and I’ll be buying one for my son to have. I’ve just got to get him to decide which one! These would also make great presents when your children have been invited to parties.

Kidzsack are priced at £12.00 and can be bought at The Little Green Paintbox as well as lots of other great eco-friendly arts & craft materials.

National Science Week with Usborne Books

It's National Science Week from March 11th-March 20th and Usborne Books asked us if we would take a look at one of their science books.

We were sent a copy of their First Encyclopedia of Science. This is suitable for children in KS1/5yr+ but my inquisitive 4 year old son has enjoyed going through the book and listening to it as much as his 6 year old sister.

The book is internet-linked which provides games and activities linked to each topic. The relevant web address is shown within each topic. There are also links to websites for related animations, games and downloadable pictures which could be used for homework.

The book starts off explaining what science is and what scientists do. There are a variety of topics covered in this book eg Our Universe, Your brain and senses,  Atoms and Molecules, Your Body, Computers and many more.

Each 'chapter' is two pages long with clear, easy-to-read text and illustrations and photos. It was clear enough for my 6 year old to read to herself. Two pages means that it's not too intense or long-winded for young children.

There are also experiments on some pages for the children to try at home. They can't wait to make a rainbow! They love experiments and anything hands-on, particularly when we visit the Inspire Discovery Centre in Norwich with it's range of practical science activities.

My two loved Energy as it was explained and illustrated using a fairground meaning it was easy for them to relate to and comprehend.

This is a book that will last for a good few years and is something we will refer back to on many occasions, particularly if they study one of the subjects at school. I'm expecting them to take their knowledge with them to the Science Festival at Jimmy's Farm on the 19th/20th March that we hope to attend.

Usborne's First Encyclopedia of Science is priced at £8.99 and is available on their website or through your local Usborne Organiser.

Pancakes

*

As it's Shrove Tuesday tomorrow I though I'd share the recipe I use. It's really basic and easy which I like!

You need:

4ozs plain flour
2 eggs
200ml-300ml milk (I rarely measure this out and just add to the mixture until I get the right consistency)

Sift the flour into a bowl, crack the two eggs into the flour and beat together. Add the milk gradually and keep whisking until you get a smooth batter.

Heat a little oil in a frying pan (we use a small omelette pan for child-sized pancakes) and put in enough batter to coat the base thinly. Cook for a couple of minutes either side.

Serve immediately with sprinkled sugar and lemon juice....it's the only way in my book.

Enjoy!

Looking forward....

Well, it's been a bit of a naff start to 2011 with weeks of the boys being ill and me being so stressed that I had chest pains and thought I was having a heart attack! The only way is up though. I have a lot to look forward to, particularly in the next few months.

This weekend we're all taking part in the Town 102 & EACH Treehouse Appeal Feetbeat Challenge. We haven't managed to fundraise a huge amount of money as we only signed up about 10 days ago, but we're contributing something to a great cause and it'll be good to do something together. Ever since Mark Fox from EACH gave a talk about the Treehouse Appeal at my daughter's Rainbows she has been really keen to help out more.

Next Saturday we are going to see Spamalot at Ipswich Regent. I LOVE anything to do with Monty Python. They are my comedy heroes. My Dad got me into watching Python many, many years ago and I have been obsessed with them ever since. As soon as I heard Spamalot was coming to Ipswich I begged hubby to book tickets. I've had them since goodness knows when and they were a Christmas present.
It's going to be an interesting night out as hubby just doesn't get anything of theirs. I asked him to tell me what he knew of Python, thinking that everyone knew at least half a dozen quotes but all he could come up with was "There's something about a dead parrot and a lumberjack"

On May 7th we'll be back at the Regent for another dream show (for me) Russell Watson. I think his voice is out of this world and I could listen to it all day and night. It's no wonder that he is known as 'The Voice'. It will be the second time I have seen him in Ipswich. I wanted to go a few years ago but I was too late for tickets and then he had a brain tumour diagnosed. After I missed out that time I promised myself I would definitely go to see him if he toured locally. It was a very emotional experience listening to him sing live and I can't wait to go again! I heard about Russell touring in 2011 not long after hubby bought the Spamalot tickets so these had to be for my birthday. At the rate I was going I'd be a few birthdays and Christmas's in advance! Hubby is coming with me as 2 tickets were bought and I can't find anyone else who wants to come with me. It really isn't his choice of music but he feels that it's worth going to as it's a night out with me. I have to put up with football matches so it's only right that he can sit and watch me swoon over Russell's voice for a couple of hours!!

A week later will be my youngest son's 1st birthday. I had a really rough time during my pregnancy with him and there was a lot of concern over him before he was born, and for a few months after, so it's great that we've got this far and he's healthy and well. He's still tiny but he's happy and content and that's all that matters. I went completely overboard with my daughter's first birthday and was so stressed that it ruined the day so I know that it needs to be low-key. Who remembers their 1st birthday anyway?! I have ordered the cake and think we'll probably have a small family get together in the garden or park if it's nice and then go to indoor play with a few friends the day after.

In June I'll be taking part in the Race For Life with a group of Mummy friends. I took part a few years ago and then organised my own fundraising events for a couple of years but I just don't have the time to do that at the moment. Cancer affects everyone in one way or another. I lost my Nana to cancer 13 years ago so she's one big reason I'm taking part but it's a very worthwhile cause to raise funds for no matter how you've been affected.

In late July/early August we'll be going to Red Rose Chain's Theatre In The Forest to see their production of Twelfth Night. I'm really excited about this. Red Rose Chain were kind enough to invite us to see A Winter's Tale in 2009 when we were the Heart Family. As it got dark and the lights came on it was a truly magical experience and there was a great atmosphere. Me & my daughter went again last year to see a wonderful performance of A Midsummer Night's Dream and we all want to go this year. I can highly recommend that you go. It's an event that you shouldn't miss.

September sees my middle son starting school. Due to changes in the admissions policy he will be starting a term early. He seems really keen to go to 'big school' like his sister and I only hope he has the same attitude in 6 months time! It will be great for him and he really needs the structure and discipline to his day. It will mean that I will get to spend more quality time with my youngest as we've been unable to attend certain groups as we're spending most of our day going to and from school and preschool.

World Book Day giveaway

In celebration of World Book Day I have two fab children's books to giveaway.

Both books are from Top That! Publishing in Woodbridge. My children have a lot of their books and always love reading them. They particularly enjoy their Magnetic Books so that they can make up their own stories.

Top That! are an independent publisher's of children's books with an international reputation. There is a huge range of books on their website and they even have a range of eBooks and iPhone applications click here to be taken to their website.

I have a copy of Toucan Toucan't by Peter Francis-Browne to giveaway as well as Pirates Ahoy! A sticker story activity book.

The first thing that struck me about Toucan Toucan't was the beautiful bold illustrations by Rita Gianetti. It's a simple, fun story of two birds, one a Toucan the other a Tou-can't. It uses imaginative wordplay and it appealed to all 3 of my children. The youngest for the colours, my 4 year old found the story funny and my 6 year old liked reading it to herself and to her younger brothers. I really enjoyed reading it to them as well. Toucan Toucan't is recommended for ages 3-5 but my youngest is nearly 10 months and he happily sat listening to us read to him.

Pirates Ahoy! is a fantastic activity book with a mix of stickers, a story and various activities all Pirate themed. The back page is a long fold-out playscene and included are 50 re-useable stickers. This is a key thing as my 4 year old son is always changing his mind about where to place stickers. There are questions and activities throughout the story. At the end there is a quiz based on a scene at the back and things you would have read about in the story. I really liked the inclusion of a page encouraging a child to write the alphabet to see if they can do better than One-Eyed Jack. My son is struggling with his writing and this got him practising without thinking he was 'working'. Pirates Ahoy! is suitable for 3yrs+. This is great fun for any child that is mad about pirates but even my daughter loved hearing the story and trying to answer the questions.

To be in with a chance of winning one of these books you need to do the following;

This is Me meme

This post originally came from Sticky Fingers but I picked up the link from @LaurenHousewife

Ask your child - their age doesn't matter - to draw a picture of you.
Post it on your blog.
Let's call it the This is Me Meme
Err, that's it.
Pass it on to your friends/enemies if you want to.
(If you don't have a fancy pants scanner, take a photo of it and post it that way!)

I asked my 6 year old daughter to draw a picture of me and this is what she came up with:

She has chosen to draw me shopping for clothes. I don't know why as it's rare that I go clothes shopping for myself! I love the attention to detail with the tiled floor. My hair isn't in the style of Miss Hoolie but that's how she draws all females at the moment. I'm intrigued to see that my arms are thicker than my legs, again that is NOT the case!!

If you take part in this I'd love to see what you look like so please paste the link in the comments box below!

Who would have thought life as a SAHM was so stressful?!

What a day!

I started this morning off with a migraine and planned to get some rest while middle son was at preschool this morning but I ended up in A&E instead!

All seemed okay, apart form the migraine, and then my daughter kicked off when we got to school (heaven knows why) and middle son started kicking and screaming at preschool as he didn't want me to leave. As I was struggling to get him to calm down I started experiencing chest pains. The preschool leader managed to drag him off me and by the time I got out of the door the pains were excruciating and I could barely breathe. In a panic I phoned hubby and got his answer phone. Grrrr! After leaving a hysterical "Get home now!' message I then made my way home. Slowly and in tears, trying to hide my face from passers by. Thankfully the pains subsided after 10-15 minutes although I was still struggling to breathe. I made it home and just collapsed on the sofa.

All that kept going through my mind was that it was a heart attack. My Mum was rushed into hospital a few weeks ago with a suspected heart attack and there is a history of heart problems on my Mum's side of the family. Heart failure is what took my Nanna from us last year.

Nigel came home as soon as he picked up the message and took me to A&E as recommended by our doctor's surgery. We were in within a couple of minutes but one of the first things the triage nurse said was that my GP should have seen me. Make me feel guilty, why don't you!

After 4 hours, a worryingly high blood pressure result, 4 ECGs, a blood test and being shunted from one room to another all tests showed that my heart was working fine and nothing untoward was showing but after talking to me about recent events it was 'diagnosed' that I am highly stressed, need to rest as much as possible and need to get some help with the children.

My hubby, bless him, has been a star today. He has looked after the children today giving me a break and is taking the rest of the week off so that I can rest.

I know that in previous posts I have admitted that I am not coping with the children and the last couple of weeks have been really hard but after today's scare it just makes me realise that it has affected me more than I thought. There has also been the worry of my hubby's job and my Mum's heart scare and I guess it has just all built up to today.

If life as a stay at home is so stressful for me how on earth would I cope with a job as well?

5 years...5 things

I have 5 years until I hit the big 4-0 and I've been thinking lately about some things that I'd like to do before I get there. Some people would say they'd like to travel the world or change career but I'm thinking of doing things on a smaller scale. I'd love to travel but a) we couldn't afford it, b) we'll have young children and c) I'm too much of a homebody!  and as for career...what career?!

My 5 things are easily achievable, I hope! Not a huge amount to aspire to or have as ambitions but I would rather that than having pipe dreams.

1. I really think it's time I learnt to drive. Until my youngest was born I was happy walking everywhere and relying on public transport but there are times I need to be in 3 different places within a few hours and my life just seems to be wasting away waiting for buses. I've also found that there are times, particularly in the summer holidays, when the children would like to go to the zoo or a farm park but it's not possible to get there by public transport so we have to wait for a weekend when Dad is home. I'd still walk as much as possible as it's great exercise, for me and the children, and they appreciate their surroundings more. It's not as straightforward as signing up for lessons and passing a test. I have hip dysplasia and when I tried driving my husband's car it was really uncomfortable, painful even. I'd have to learn to drive an automatic car and then we'd have to be in a position to afford another car for me to have or wait until the lease is up on my husband's business car and get an automatic for us both to share.

2.I need to be able to handle my son's bad behaviour. I won't go into details as I've posted about it previously but there are times when I just cannot cope with him. I believe it's as much me as it is him so it's time we sorted out whatever the problem is.

3. I'd like to find my 'niche'. Some have creativity, some excel in their careers, some have hobbies that define them. I have none of the above. My husband bought me a digital SLR 3 years ago. I can point and shoot but that's it. Such a waste of a brilliant camera. Therefore I would love to learn how to use it and take fabulous photos. That then would perhaps be my 'thing'. I love photography and I am so jealous of those that know how to utilise their cameras.

4. My Macbook is now over a year old and I am CONSTANTLY asking my husband to help me out on it and he's always having to google instructions for me. It is a great laptop but I am regularly flummoxed.  I spent 4 weeks trying to put together a dvd slideshow of my children for my Mum and I got so frustrated. Once we read the instructions online it was SO simple. I had wasted every evening for a month on something that should have taken 10 minutes at most. So, I need to sit down and learn how to get the most out of my Mac and use it properly.

5. Start my own business or find something where I could be my own boss. If everything goes to plan I will be able to stay at home until my youngest starts school in 4 years time. When my husband's job was at risk recently we had to consider the possibility that I would need to go out to work sooner than expected and I started to think about what I'd like to do if I had the luxury of choice. One of my biggest concerns (other than not being around for the children during the daytime) was whether I could work for someone. I have had 7 years of being my own boss, well, the children's boss! I love to lead and I think I would take a long time to re-adjust to having to answer to someone. I'm making myself sound like a great prospective employee, aren't I?! I think having my own business would be really good and it's something I'd love to try. What the business would be I don't know yet. I have a few years to decide!

So, those are the things I would like to have achieved by 2016.

If you have 5 things you'd like to achieve in 5 years time, whether you have an important birthday or not, please add the link to your blog post below.
