Calling all you Gok Wan wannabes

I have a wedding to go to in May and I need your help.

I do not know what to wear or even where to begin.

I live in my jeans and baggy tops most of the time and I don't do posh, certainly not on a tight budget!

So...I'd like to set you budding fashionistas a little (well, HUGE where I'm concerned) challenge. I need your suggestions.

Just to give you some help:

I'm a short, lumpy, dumpy, frump. I am 5ft 3ins and I dress suitable for someone 20 years older than I am.

I'm less apple, more yorkshire pudding.

I have the legs and ankles of an elephant so skirts & dresses are out.

I have bingo wings so need sleeves of some kind.

I have hip dysplasia so shoes need to be relatively comfortable to be worn all day & evening. Nothing too high and definitely not open-toed.

My favourite colour is black but apparently black is a big no-no for a daytime wedding. Darn it!

Jeez, what an attractive person ;)

Post links to outfits in the comments below please. If you have any questions, please ask. There is no prize for this, just my eternal gratitude.

Off you go. Wave your magic wand and show me the perfect outfit......

  1. I'm no fashionista but I do know that you're certainly NOT a 'short, lumpy, dumpy frump'. I've never heard such utter rubbish. And who said you can't wear black to a wedding? If black is a colour you feel comfortable & good in then you wear it and team it with brightly coloured accessories. To be honest Heidi pretty much anything goes these days. Obviously not jeans but the day of the starched pastel dress, jacket & hat at a wedding is out - unless it's a Royal Wedding perhaps. I think you should stop looking at the negatives and look at the positives. You have a beautiful clear olive skin tone for one thing and thick glossy dark hair which always looks stunning in muted Mediterranean colours. Why not go for a maxi dress suitable for petite height fitted at the bust - perhaps even halter neck - to show off your cleavage (if you got it flaunt it) accessorised with a pretty pair of ballet flats and bolero cardigan to hide those 'bingo wings' you write about! Or how about a nice pair of wide leg palazzo trousers and a pretty summery kaftan top of the design that wear so well (you certainly don't dress 20 years older) and again one that shows off your assets and teamed with some pretty ballet flats.

As I say I'm no Gok Wan and certainly no style icon but if there's one thing I've learnt since entering my 40's it's this. Even if you budget on the outfit do NOT budget with the underwear. A decent set of underwear properly fitted is worth more than an expensive outfit.

Oh and another beauty is skin deep remember so less of this 'yorksire pudding' malarkey - you are a beautiful person and once you start believing that the rest will just slot into place.

Good luck - can't wait to see the photos. xxx

  2. Well as I suggested you do this post I thought I best reply! Sorry for the delay.

I know you said no to dresses because of your legs and ankles but have you considered a maxi dress? They are floor length so will cover your legs and you can also get away with wearing them with flats. You don't get many with sleeves and I know you want to cover your arms, but most look lovely with a plain cardigan or short jacket. Also if you find the right shape they can really flattering.

The other thing about wearing a dress is that its less items to buy and you instantly feel dressed up and special.

There are some nice maxi dresses about at the moment, I've not met you so not sure what would suit but here's a selection of colours and shapes.

Next do a lovely simple metallic sandle that will go with any of these, I have bought them the last three years because they are dead comfy.

H&M have a really good selection of colourful spring cardigans at the moment to go with any of these.

Hope this helps get you started! If they are scary suggestions then order a load anyway, try them on in the comfort of your own home - you can always return them. Be prepared to try on loads, thats half the fun of it!
