How much?!

It doesn't seem that a week goes past without a note coming home from school asking for money for trips, events, non-uniform days and so on. It's an expensive business with two at school and one at nursery. It's great that they have these events happening but the regular demands for cash, sorry 'voluntary contributions' soon adds up.

In a couple of week's time Charlie is having a 'Day in the Life of Florence Nightingale'. It sounds great going by the day's itinerary...apart from the costume. Girls have to dress as Florence Nightingale, which shouldn't be too difficult to achieve, but the boys have to go as Crimean Soldiers. It's not the easiest costume to get hold of.

Joker's tweeted me a link for their toy soldier costume which is as close as I will get to Crimean soldier but it's £17 plus delivery. Can I really justify £20 on a costume that will more than likely be worn (and wrecked) on that one day at school? It's not something he will want to wear again.

After a little research online I can see that making one will cost as much, if not more, if you factor in time shopping for the items and then (the stress of) making it and that's if I can actually find time to put it together!

How much would you spend on a costume for school? Do you buy them or make them from scratch?

  1. £20 seems a wee bit steep to me, I wouldn't mind if it was a costume they could wear again for a few things, but a Crimean soldier seems a bit of a random one! Could he go as a wounded soldier and be wrapped up in bandages? It is Florence Nightingale after all

  2. We payout a lot of school things & nursery is £3 a week toy fund. But usually they have alternatives for costumes. That's a hard one, I'd ask other parents what they are putting their child in. Good luck hon sorry I'm not much help xx

  3. I'm sure you could make it for less. A cardboard weapon and hat. Trousers tucked into boots (black wellies will do), a white shirt and a belt. A red jacket or coat could be a problem but the Russians wore black coats - just sew on some trimmings. Or he could have lost his coat in the battle :)
