The My Style Shrink Design Jewellery has all you need to create seven jewellery projects with shrink plastic pendants.
Molly couldn't wait to get started with her designs and they are very easy to make. Adult supervision is only really needed when baking the shrink pendants and perhaps with the cutting out as there are a few fiddly lines.
The accompanying booklet has lots of templates in and there is printable .pdf available online for extra templates. There are also decorating tips and techniques.
You trace the design onto the plastic sheet and colour it in with pencils, felt tips or markers. We found that pens rubbed off easily so we had to be careful where we placed our hands and we gave the pendants a second layer of colour.
Once you've coloured your design you cut it out and punch holes using the hole punch included in the kit (This bit is VERY important, don't forget to do it like I did on a couple of items!) and place the pendants onto the cardboard tray and pop into the oven for a couple of minutes.
This is where things went a little wrong for us. I'd read the instructions which warned of some warping and curling….but our cardboard tray curved so all of the pendants fell off! After a bit of panicking and some quick manipulation of the card they were back in the oven. They still curled a little bit but the instructions advise quickly placing them onto a kitchen board and flattening with a glass baking dish. This soon sorted them out.
We soon got the hang of it though and Molly's designs were soon baked and ready to use in her jewellery designs. Her first projects were to make one necklace and one bracelet for her friends. The small plastic beads were a nightmare to thread onto the black cord as it frayed easily so she used some larger beads that we have at home. Unfortunately I've often found that these kits provide beads that are too small to fit onto the cord but we always have a large supply of beads at home, thank goodness!
The elastic thread took the beads much easier and Molly thoroughly enjoyed putting the bracelet together.
As well as loving the cool designs I think Molly liked the kit because it was something that she could mostly do on her own and I had very little involvement.
Overall, a lovely kit for girls to make but you just need to be prepared for the baking tray to curl and if using the cord you may need some different beads from those supplied.
