Annie is the classic rags to riches tale that has seen various incarnations over the years. The last I saw was the 1976 film, many years ago, but Molly was more familiar with the most recent film from 2014.
Last night was the opening night of Annie The Musical at
Norwich Theatre Royal. The standing ovation was much deserved and it's not difficult to see why the show is a sell-out.

Craig Revel Horwood, probably best known for being a Strictly Come Dancing judge, was simply brilliant as the gin-swilling, tyrannical Miss Hannigan in charge of the orphanage. Molly believed that he was the best performer there but I struggle to single anyone out as each and every member of the cast were top-notch, but having said that, Isabella Pappas does deserve a special mention for her stellar turn as Annie. Her singing was spot on and it caused chills (and more than a few tears!) on a number of occasions. The orphans were adorable and their comic timing was perfect.
For those unaware of the story, Annie is set during the Great Depression in 1930s America and we see Annie's journey to find her birth parents. Along the way we witness the effect the Great Depression has had on some and it doesn't shy away from the issues of the day, showing the unemployed and homeless. Annie is then chosen by Grace Farrell, Mr Warbucks' assistant, to spend Christmas with the billionaire and he decides to help Annie in her search for her real parents, even calling in a favour from President Roosevelt, but Miss Hannigan and her rotten brother Rooster hatch an evil plan to spoil Annie's quest.

With amazing renditions of familiar songs
It's a Hard Knock Life, Tomorrow, Easy Street and some not so well-known tunes, breathtaking choreography and a story of hope, despite Annie's rotten start in life, it's a stunning show for all of the family to enjoy.
Annie is in Norwich until 22nd August. See tour website for more details:
