When we have reviewed Ravensburger puzzles in the past they have been purely for the children but I thought it would be nice to do one myself as a relaxing activity-much needed during the long 6 week summer holiday!
I was sent Day with Grandma and Grandpa, two 500 piece puzzles, with lovely scenes by Trevor Mitchell, of a grandson and granddaughter enjoying a day in the garden cleaning the car and fixing a bike and then spending time baking with their grandparents.
I've never done a puzzle with as many pieces as 500 pieces so, guessing that it would take me some time, I got out our Ravensburger Puzzle Store so that I could separate the pieces into sections and put the puzzle away safely before finishing it.
The pieces are smaller than I'm used to but not unmanageable.
The children soon got involved, one at a time, helping sort the pieces into sections and then passing me pieces as I started putting it together. Sometimes I'd be staring between a piece and the picture for ages, trying to work out where it went but they'd know almost instantly. There is nothing wrong with their eyesight!!
Towards the end it became a big family activity with each of them popping in and out of the dining room to help. Although I had wanted to do this alone I don't think I ever would've finished without their help. They were really great at spotting subtle differences in shading within the picture.
The children got involved again with the second puzzle and when we were dividing the sections up we thought it would be much tougher as there were so many similar pieces but it actually took a little less time. Each puzzle took under 5 hours to finish over two or three sessions. I don't know if that's a good time for 500 pieces but we felt it was about right for us.
The puzzles are aimed at age 12+ but I think it's suitable for most ages, with adult assistance. We all took part in completing it and it would be a lovely puzzle for grandparents & grandchildren to make together. It was really nice to do something quiet without phones, tabs and the tv being on and the children loved seeing the end result, feeling really proud of what we had achieved!
The pieces are sturdy and of high quality, as are all Ravensburger puzzles that we have had over the years.
Day with Grandma and Grandpa retails at £11.99
