I've set myself a target of reading 40 books this year. I completed the Goodreads challenge last year beating my target of 35 books by 7. I was a bit slow towards the end of the year until I spent 4 days in hospital with nothing much to do except read! I go through phases of reading loads and then seem to have a break for a few weeks and need short stories just to get me back into reading again.
This is what I have read so far in 2017.
Bridget Jones's Baby by Helen Fielding
I haven't seen the film yet so I don't know how it compares but I found this one quite short.
Harm by Hugh Fraser
Hugh Fraser is probably better known as Captain Hastings in Poirot and I was a little sceptical of reading a novel written by an actor but I shouldn't have worried. This was a gripping crime novel with a strong and likeable heroine and I thoroughly enjoyed it. It was one of those books I only put down when I'd hit myself in the face with it because I'd read until way past my bedtime!
A Life In Parts by Bryan Cranston
Before Breaking Bad I had only seen Bryan as the Dad in Malcolm in the Middle. This book is brilliantly written and shows that there is far more to the man who portrayed Walter White. It was one of the more interesting autobiographies that I've read.

Father Brown:
The Innocence of Father Brown
The Secret Garden
Queer Feet
Father Brown with Mark Williams on BBC One is one of my favourite programmes on tv so when I first received a kindle I downloaded G.K. Chesterton's Father Brown stories for free but never got around to reading them. I read three of them in quick succession at the beginning of the year. They're a little shorter than I expected but they were perfect as my concentration soon waned (being on morphine!)
A Sackful of Limericks by Michael Palin
I'm a huge fan of Michael Palin so when I saw this book on offer while spending my Waterstones voucher online I couldn't resist it. It's full of funny limericks and Molly and Charlie both sneaked this book out of my room to read!
Murder from the Newsdesk by Peter Bartram (7 short stories)
I don't usually go for crime stories but so far this year I've read quite a lot of that genre. Murder From The Newsdesk was another freebie on kindle when I was looking for something quick to devour. Some of these stories are really short but great if you want a quick read of a few minutes. When I've cleared some of my To Be Read pile I intend to download some of Peter's longer novels.
What have you been reading this year?
Do you have any recommendations?
