Easter seems like it was so long ago but I've been so busy lately that I've fallen behind with uploading photos and posts.
We were looking online for an Easter egg hunt (mainly because I wasn't organised enough to sort one of our own out!) but all we could find were ones which incurred costly entrance fees for venues and we were still feeling skint after my 3 months off work unpaid so I came up with the idea of doing a local Treasure Trail and buying a couple of bags of mini eggs as rewards for the children finding the answers. Usually hubby takes over if the children are struggling but this time they'd have to work together as a team, without assistance, to each win a mini egg after each clue.
We downloaded the Norwich Cathedral murder mystery trail and although we know that area well there were still a number of plaques and statues that we have walked past a number of times but not taken any notice of before. The trails are always full of educational content and fascinating history. It's always good to take a slow walk around and discover more about our surroundings.
It was rather nice for me & hubby to take a step back and watch them searching for answers. They worked together amazingly well and only got stuck on two of the clues. Admittedly, one of them was a little misleading and it took me & hubby ages to find the answer ourselves.
The Octagon Chapel is one of our favourite buildings in Norwich.
"This looks like a church Mum"
Last year Molly & I attended an outdoor play by The Common Lot about Kett's Rebellion, one of Norfolk's most infamous historical events and she's been fascinated by anything to do with it ever since.
Harry said he liked this Mother & Child statue because it reminded him of me & him having hugs. Bless.

Edith's grave was restored, blessed and re-dedicated in 2016.
What a heroine.
In the grounds of the cathedral the Hawk and Owl Trust had set up some telescopes so that the public could see the Peregrines and eggs in their nesting platform high up on the cathedral spire. You can check out their webcam and news feed here: Hawk and Owl Trust, Norwich
I love this clock on the cathedral. The colours are much more stunning than in the photo.
Shhh! St Benedict heard my gang coming.
Julian of Norwich wrote Revelations of Divine Love c.1395 and it's the first book to be written in the English language by a woman.
Edith Cavell Memorial on Tombland by The Erpingham Gate. Harry studied Edith's story when he was at his Speech Unit last year so he was taking quite an interest in her grave and memorial. He's still a bit young to understand the sacrifice she made but one day he will.
The name of this jeweller's on Elm Hill made me chuckle.
After the last clue was eventually found we worked out who the murderer was and which weapon they had used...it's like an outdoor version of Cluedo (which I never really enjoyed playing for some reason)
The trail ended by this church with a stunning blossom tree in front. "Oh Mum, not more blossom photos" was the joint cry from the children!
It was a lovely way of spending a couple of hours wandering around the city and the children were more than happy with their mini egg rewards.
Did you take part in any Easter Egg hunts?

This sounds like an inspired way to enjoy a family Easter Egg Hunt without too much organisation on your part. These Treasure Trails do look fab, I love that they get you out exploring your local area and discovering parts that you had previously missed! I bet the kids loved their chocolate wins at each clue they answered.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing with me on #CountryKids.
It is nice t step back and let them do the work, isn't it? Good idea to do a free trail and give them egg rewards. Mich x #Countrykids
ReplyDeleteHow lovely to learn about the history of the area and some of the people that died making it what it is today, and great to get them involved in the learning by making it fun. I think it is important for them to appreciate the history.
ReplyDeletelol at another blossom picture. I am away for a look at the webcam #countrykids
I love treasure trails. We haven't done one for a while but there are such a brilliant way of noticing some of the little details in different places - even areas that you know very well. I did one a few years ago in my hometown and spotted things that I had never noticed before. Turning it into an Easter egg trail is such a good idea. I remember reading about Edith Cavell at school and would have found it interesting to visit her grave as well. Looks like you all had a fun time :-) #countrykids
ReplyDeleteSounds like a great way of exploring somewhere, learning and having fun at the same time #CountryKids
