Taverham Mill, run by Anglian Water, is just 2 miles away from us but I've only walked around it once, not long after we moved to Norfolk in 2013. Me & the boys were looking for something to do this morning (Molly was left at home in bed!) and we'd been saying for ages that we were due a proper return visit.
It's a beautiful nature reserve near an old weir and mill pool that covers about 100 acres with 4 lakes and a section of the River Wensum running through it.
Checking out the bug hotel that Charlie helped to create at Nature Rangers a couple of years ago.
There are 2 circular nature trails at the reserve. We walked the red one last time so chose the blue lake walk this time.
I just love the Highland Cattle. They're gorgeous!
Harry spotted this Damselfly when we were in the bird hide and I was luck enough to capture a photo before it flew away.
It's a nature lover's dream and the boys plan to take their bug hunting kits and binoculars on our next visit.
"Wow Mum, this is the longest feather I have EVER seen!"
I can see we'll be returning for a spot of blackberry picking later this year :-)
It was such a serene walk around the lake and we only saw two other groups of people.
As you can tell from the raindrops on the leaves this frog was tiny. I'm amazed that I managed to see it!
After the walk, which at a leisurely pace took us about an hour, the boys spent a little time in the small play area.
We plan to visit again really soon and to take a picnic with us as there's a lovely little picnic area near to the Visitor Centre and car park.
Admission is just £3 for adults and children are free.
Have you got any hidden gems on your doorstep?
