Earlier this year the Education Minister Liz Truss announced that the ratio of adults to children in nurseries was to be relaxed where the nursery staff had the appropriate standard of qualifications. I never thought that this was a good idea. I sometimes struggle to manage my 3 children, ages 8, 6 and 2, so you can imagine how difficult it would be trying to deal with 6 two year olds!
This week I read that Liz Truss has criticised 'unruly' and 'chaotic' nurseries for failing to ensure children have structured play and not preparing them for being able to sit and listen to a teacher once they begin primary school. According to her, children are less well mannered because of this and are running around with no purpose.
A few things bother me about her comments.
Firstly, running around without purpose...isn't that what being a toddler is all about? There's enough pressure on children as they get older. For goodness sake, let toddlers be toddlers!
Secondly, if nurseries are already chaotic how is relaxing the ratio going to help? My son has extra educational needs and it amazes me how his key-worker finds time to work one on one with him each session whilst looking after 3 other children so how on earth is she meant to focus on my child, or any other child for that matter, with 5 other children to contend with.
Thirdly, are we, as parents, no longer expected to teach our children please and thank you? My son goes to nursery to strengthen his social skills but good manners start at home. It's not the nursery's responsibility. They are there to reinforce what has been learnt at home but ultimately it must come from the parents. I do understand that sadly there are so many who refuse to accept that as their responsibility.
How do you feel about Liz's comments?
