5 Minute Fun activity review

5 Minute Fun is a free email service of fun activities to try with children aged 2-5 and they support Early Years Curriculum learning with topics such as Communication, Language and Literacy, Lets' Move, Feeling Good, Maths, Finding Out and Creative.

Activites are easy and simple to do and can be done at home, on the school run or pretty much wherever you are!

Two free activities, tailored to your child's age, will be emailed to you each day and you can do either or both.

Harry is a little older than the target age but he's a child that is always on the go and sometimes it hard to pin him down for some quiet, quality time together. With life as a Mum of 3 children being so hectic as well it's good to find some time where we can both sit and enjoy doing an activity together. The eldest two sometimes joined in as well.

We were sent a selection of activities from each learning area to try over the course of a week and Harry chose to do them at random. Some lasted longer than others and he certainly had some favourite activities that he'd like to repeat one day.

On Day One Harry had to imagine that he was a little chick hatching from an egg. He started off small and once he'd hatched he was bouncing around like a kangaroo!

Day Two had us looking out of the window together looking for things that we green, blue or brown. This really tested his observational skills…and mine too! We expanded the activity by choosing different colours.

Harry had to talk about his favourite toy on Day Three and I knew straightaway that he'd choose Roary. He discussed why Roary was his favourite and why he likes spending time with him and having him close by. He had to come up with an adventure for him & Roary and said that he'd take him on a trip to the zoo so that he could meet some of his friends and family.

Day Four tested Harry's counting skills (and unintentionally his speech skills with pronunciation practise). Harry had to count as high as he could before making a medal for himself. He paced around the garden as he counted, carefully timing each step with each number, to see how many times he went around the garden. He loved this one and I was very impressed to hear him count up to 110 without any mistakes. Charlie helped with the medal and we even had a ceremony!

Day Five's activity was done on the bus into the city. We had to go through the alphabet and point at objects beginning with each letter. If there wasn't an object around Harry would make something up. This one really helped him practise his phonics because listening to phonic sounds is something he's working hard on in the speech therapy unit.

Creative activities are always popular with my gang and Charlie was really keen to join in with this one. They had to make a time travelling wristband so they eagerly grabbed the craft box and got stuck in. Harry thought carefully about what each button meant and then he went on a time travelling adventure to the future….talking about me being very old and even greyer than I am now!

Our last activity this week was quite possibly Harry's favourite and lasted ages. We had to pretend to be superheroes and we ran, jumped and flew around the garden-complete with tea towel capes. He was Smash Hulk Junior who goes around smashing up all the baddies and Harry named me Super Speedy Mum whose special powers were being able to get all her chores done super speedily so she could spend more time playing with her children.

We had great fun doing these and every morning Harry was keen to remind me that he had a 5 minute activity to do. Despite having three children it's still helpful to get some fresh ideas for fun stuff to do. With it being the school holidays it has obviously been easy to fit into our day but as they are only 5 minutes long and with most activities you don't need any equipment or materials I believe it will be very easy to fit them into everyday schedules.
