Wandering the Wensum Way

I'd been stuck at home with a poorly Harry for a week so when the weekend arrived I couldn't wait to get out of the house! Charlie, Molly and I headed into the city for a couple of hours Christmas shopping and on the way out I suggested we headed to Blickling park as I hadn't been for months and I fancied a walk and some fresh air. Our journey into the city took us past Wensum Park, which we've only visited once in our 3 years here so Charlie asked if we could go there instead.

It's a beautiful park and I'm sure we must have missed most of it first time around as we discovered lots of 'new' parts to it.

What do you do when you see a bridge? Play pooh sticks of course!

I really don't know how we managed to miss this labyrinth. We must have walked around with our eyes shut!

12 zodiac posts were around the perimeter of the labyrinth so I set the children a challenge to race to a particular zodiac sign.

This little waterfall was a little random at the edge of the park and we only walked towards that path as I saw someone cycle off down the path and I wondered where it took us to.

After walking past some beautiful riverside properties and crossing a bridge over the River Wensum we found ourselves joining Marriott's Way, which runs from Norwich, through our village of Drayton, right up to Aylsham. The children weren't quite sure which way to head but thankfully I had my bearings!

They were bored of walking so I challenged them to race to lampost #23. It worked!

What's this?! Siblings actually getting on?!

The end of Marriott's Way in Norwich by the old city station.

Marking the start (or the end??) of the route. Every mile along the route there are rail mile markers, each showing elements of the railway line's past. We've only found the first 9 from Norwich. One day I hope to walk or cycle the entire route.

On the way back towards the car I spotted a cottage with figures and plaques on the external wall but most unusual was its number. It was 167 1/2. I've never seen a 1/2 house number before!

Quite an impressive display of fungi.

The view of the park from the colonnade.

We had a lovely impromptu walk and it's great that after 3 years we're still discovering new places locally. We ended up walking over 2 miles, which might not sound a lot to most, but with my hip dysplasia it felt like a marathon!

  2. What a fab place to explore with the kids, it's wonderful that you've discovered a new local day out that's cheap too! The kids look like they had a wonderful time and even got along as you explored the new park, it looks like there's loads to see and do there. That labyrinth looks like a fab way to tire out the kids, and the waterfall looks lovely and relaxing.

Thanks for linking up with me on #CountryKids.
